Ramadan 2016 (1437H) – Food Distribution
This year Qidwai Welfare Trust had another very successful Ramadan Food Distribution. We managed to distribute approximately 70,000kg (154,300 lb) of food stables to 1,400 Zakat eligible families in some of the poorest, and neediest communities in Pakistan. We also arranged to have 1,000 hot meals to be served to poor and needy people during the month of Ramadan.
Each family received a food pack with approximately 50kg (110 lb) of food stables, including 20kg of flour, 10kg of rice, 5kg of sugar, 5kg of oil, 4kg of lentils, 2kg of chickpeas, 2kg of gram flour, 1kg of dates, 0.5kg of tea, 0.5 kg of salt, 1 bottle of concentrated juice.
We distributed 150 food packs in Banni – Punjab, 150 food packs in Tarnol – Punjab, 20 food packs in Islamabad, 180 food packs in Charsada – KPK, 200 food packs in Dahali, Thar Desert – Sindh, 200 food packs in Chachoroo, Thar Desert – Sindh, 150 food packs in Diplo, Thar Desert – Sindh, and 350 food packs in Karachi – Sindh.
All the recipient families were pre-screened by our partner organization, Muslim Aid Pakistan a couple of days prior to the distribution, and all efforts were made to ensure that they were Zakat eligible. Preference was given to poor and needy families of orphans, widows, homeless, unemployed and disabled people.
This year we distributed 40% of our food packs (550 packs) in the Thar Desert, which is once again in the grip of a humanitarian crisis, and where hundreds of women and children have already died this year. The areas in Thar that we targeted were some of the most remote villages close to the Pakistan-India border, and which were only accessible via sand roads, and which had no electricity, gas, running water, mobile telecommunication coverage, clinics or hospitals. The residents of these villages were mostly nomads living in mud dwellings, and surviving off their small dwindling herds of livestock.
